How to Kick Start Your Fitness Routine and Not Fail

Do you want to start a fitness routine but don’t know where to begin? If so, you have come to the right place! I am going to tell you exactly how to start a fitness routine with ease. I won’t over complicate this, okay so let’s just get right to it. After this you’ll be on your way to starting your fitness routine as soon as today or tomorrow!

Schedule Your Exercise Time

This is so important if you want to get into a routine you must schedule it in! It seems so simple, but do not neglect this step. I know you and I are busy! Between work, children, cooking, and house chores. The list goes on and on. So schedule it in. Whether you schedule it for five minutes 15 minutes or even up to an hour. Get it on your schedule. Or you will find something else to do

Go Tell Someone That you are Beginning a Workout Routine

Post on Facebook if you have to. Let people know. It will give you a sense of responsibility to that person. Ask them to ask you how it’s going, and to hold you accountable. The Coconut Tribe even has a Facebook group to help you accomplish your goals!

Better Yet, Get a Workout Buddy

Simple enough, find someone willing to train with you, either virtually or in person. If in person meet somewhere, like the gym, a park, or your house. Anywhere really just come ready to workout. There are also meet-up groups in many cities that offer free exercise.

Invest In Some Workout Gear

This goes along with telling someone, it holds you accountable. When you invest in something whether it be weights, a mat, kettle bell, or a foam roller for stretching- you will now have the responsibility to utilize what you have just invested in. And obviously, you will be using these items regularly now that you are getting into your fitness routine! You can even get a gym membership if its within your budget.

Pick What You’re Going to Wear

Do you have any clothes to exercise in? Just like above if you invest in it, you will feel a responsibility to utilize. So go get yourself a really nice workout outfit! This will make you feel awesome and athletic. If this isn’t something doable for you, then wear whatever you need to, just get dressed and get going.

Make it Fun

My husband and I will go on walks at the park and challenge each other to do various workouts. So I might tell him to sprint to the next lamp post, then jog back to me. Then he may challenge me to do lunges until I reach the lamp post ahead of us. Or while we are at the playground with our children, we may use the monkey bars to do various hanging exercises.

Create Goals

This step is crucial to your success at getting into a fitness routine. You HAVE TO set your goals (BTW, sign up for the email list to receive this free goal chartI made for you here on my site). I cannot s tress this enough, IT IS SO IMPORTANT!!! Maybe your goal is to lose weight or gain muscle. Or increase your cardiovascular strength, or keep up with your children. Whatever your goal is write it down, so you can remember why you are doing it, that way when you feel like quitting you can remind yourself of the WHY!

Sign Up for a Challenge

This is another form of accountability. Sign up and pay for something. I have run a ton of 5ks. When I was in college, I really enjoyed doing them, but they became easy. I wanted to run further distances, but I couldn’t realistically bring myself to just run (because honestly it’s not enjoyable). But I had goals for running further distances, SO, I signed up for a half marathon. I printed myself out a training schedule and I stuck to it! I got up to 7 miles, then I fell and got injured and had to stop training. But that’s not important. I am better and I run still! The point is, when you have a challenge you will be forced to train for it and show up. It is scary to step out of your comfort zone and do something new. BUT it feels incredible! Better than drugs! You will feel scared when you sign up BUT so inspired when you do it!

Create a Plan

What challenge are you working toward? I like running, so many of mine are races. But whatever your challenge is find a training regimen online to help you work towards achieving the goals you have set. You can find some on google, youtube, and pinterest just by searching for whatever it is you are going to do. Make sure to have a rest day in the mix. Start at a good pace. Don’t overdo it, you don’t want to burn out at the beginning.

Just Do It!

I know this is the Nike slogan, and goodness it is overused, but it is SO TRUE. You just have to do it! I know you can!

    1. The great part of most cruise ships (besides the unending food), is that many have gyms! It is a great time to utilize that- enjoy food, tanning, traveling, and exercising! No greater feeling! I love cruising!

  1. You are SO right! It is a MUST to schedule it in to your day! If you don’t, you always find an excuse not to do it. I have made it a regular part of our homeschool day. I have used Beachbody on Demand for over a year now and lost 17 lbs. Accountability was a huge part of my success!

    1. Yes! We are all out of routine because we just moved and my husbands work schedule changed. But I am hosting a free accountability challenge for the month of November, and it has helped me tremendously. I have been completing my workouts for 10 days straight now- even during all the chaos of moving.
